Custom vs. Standard Contract Furniture: What’s the Difference?

Both are built for commercial use. The difference is whether the piece is made to your drawings and materials — or pulled from a catalog and adapted.

Standard (catalog) contract furniture

Standard contract furniture is a manufacturer’s existing model, offered in set sizes with a menu of finishes and fabrics. It’s contract-grade and often quick to order — but you fit the room to the furniture, and the catalog’s dimensions, details, and materials are the limit.

Custom contract furniture

Custom contract furniture is built to your drawings — any dimension, configuration, detail, and finish, in your own material. A banquette follows the exact floor plan; a lounge chair hits the precise seat height; a booth matches the brand. As a custom manufacturer, we build frames, upholstery, and finishing in-house, so there’s no catalog boundary — and no showroom markup between you and the shop.

How to choose between them

  • Choose standard when a catalog piece fits the space, the spec, and the timeline as-is.
  • Choose custom when the floor plan, dimensions, brand look, or material aren’t in any catalog — or when you want COM/COL control and reupholster-ready construction that’s refreshed later instead of replaced.

There’s no minimum, so custom fits a single statement piece as easily as a full rollout.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is custom contract furniture?

Commercial-grade furniture built to your own drawings, dimensions, detailing, finish, and material (COM/COL) — rather than selected from a catalog of set models.

Is custom always more expensive than standard?

Not necessarily — it depends on materials, detailing, and quantity. Custom removes catalog and showroom markups and delivers exact fit, which often matters more on commercial projects.

Is there a minimum order for custom?

No — from a single bespoke piece to full production runs.
